BUILDING

The Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) was formed in Oct last year and launched at the International Green Building Conference held in Singapore. This new coalition of building companies and organisations would definitely be useful for those who need any information on the green building market in Singapore and the relevant contacts and networks on green buildings.

The mission of the SGBC is to: “propel the building and construction industry towards environmental sustainability by promoting green building design, practices and technologies, the integration of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings as well as building capability and professionalism to support wider adoption of green building development and practices in Singapore.”

The Founding Board of the SGBC consists of industry leaders from the private and public sectors, such as Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner, Squire Mech Pte Ltd, CapitaLand Limited, Tiong Seng Contractors Pte Ltd, Singapore Institute of Architects, Building & Construction Authority, and Housing & Development Board.

To fulfill its mission, the SGBC has 3 key thrusts and 6 action strategies:

1. Green Advocacy

Action Strategy 1 – Green Leadership

The SGBC represents Singapore in the World Green Building Council and aims to leverage on its network of international expertise and knowledge to help Singapore be a model Sustainable Built Environment in the tropics.

Action Strategy 2 – Green Products and Services

The SGBC aims to provide certification for green building-related products and services, and help to increase the demand and supply for environmentally-friendly building products and services.

2. Green Education

Action Strategy 3 – Green Competence

The SGBC enhances professionalism and knowledge in sustainable development, and works closely with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to provide training in Green Mark certification and knowledge.

Action Strategy 4 – Green Information

The SGBC organizes seminars and publishes papers and news relating to green building technical knowledge and product information.

3. Green Engagement

Action Strategy 5 – Green Campaign

The SGBC aims to promote the green message to the community through public events, engage youths through workshops and lectures in schools, and work together with NGOs and institutions.

Action Strategy 6 – Green Awards

The SGBC seeks to give recognition to green buildings, products and services, and Green Champions in Singapore.

The SGBC membership is open to building developers and contractors, architects, engineers, suppliers of building products and services, organisations and other building professionals who are interested in the green building development and market in Singapore.
